‘Make Sure You Freeze Grandma’ er samvinnuverk þriggja listamanna frá þrem löndum sem minnast Holts, byggðasafns.

Alda Halldórsdóttir var fædd árið 1913 og bjó í Holti, Hrísey með móður sinni og frænda og átti húsið allt þar til hún lést 20. júlí 1998. Hún var virk í samfélagi Hríseyjar og vinamörg en átti hvorki maka né börn svo hún arfleiddi Hríseyjarhrepp af húsinu þegar hún lést, sem stendur nú eins og gluggi að fortíðinni. Holt er nú byggðasafn og opið heimamönnum og gestum. Heimilið hefur staðið ósnert þar sem allir innviðir eru rétt eins og þegar hún lést fyrir 17 árum.

‘Make Sure You Freeze Grandma’ álítur áhorfandann og alla gesti Holts sem afkomendur Öldu. Einstakir hlutar sýningarinnar eru unnir út frá upplifun hvers listamanns í Holti. Sýningin inniheldur verk eftir kanadískan, pólskan og breskan listamann, alþjóðleg “barnabörn” Öldu. Listamennirnir eru Anna Columbine, Magda Buczek og Talia Shaaked og koma úr ólíkum áttum en dvöldu saman í gestavinnustofu Gamla Skóla í Hrísey síðastliðin maímánuð.

Talia Shaaked dróst að því sem var undir óreglunni sem var í fjölda muna í húsinu og endurgerði veggfóðrið í eldhúsinu á Holti. Veggfóðrið bæði umkringir, lokar af og myndar rými inni í sýningunni. Það vinnur sem bakgrunnur í tímahylki Öldu.
Hljóðverk Magda Buczek er gömul, pólsk vögguvísa þýdd á íslensku á einn óvægnasta hátt sem hægt er að gera við ljóð og tungumál: Google Translate. Sagan í sjálfu sér er grimm og grá, saga um konung, riddara og prinsessu sem elskuðu hvort annað en voru étin lifandi af hundi, ketti og mús. Sagan er afskræmd á tvo vegu, með vélrænni þýðingu og lesin af listamanninum sjálfum sem hefur ekki vald á tungumálinu. Útkoman verður eins og misheyrðar stunur, bæn eða galdur.
Anna Columbine er ákveðin í að horfa á rými með nýju sjónarhorni, hvort sem það er raunverulegt, ímyndað eða andlegt rými, dróst Anna sérstaklega að einu herbergi í Holti, baðherberginu. Hún myndaði það og breytti þar með skynjuninni á rýminu í óhlutbundnar myndir, liti og fljótandi form.

Magda Buczek er búsett í Warsaw, Póllandi. Hún lærði í Academy of Fine Arts í Krakow og í Antwerp. Magda vinnur með texta, ljósmyndir, myndbönd, gjörninga og fundið myndefni. Helgisiðir unglingsstúlkna og vandamál í framsetningu í poppkúltúr eru endurtekin umfjöllunarefni í verkum hennar. Hún hefur m.a. sýnt í Warsaw, Berlín, New York og Mexicoborg.

Exhibition opening Make Sure You Freeze Grandma, wednesday june 17th at 14:00 in Útibúið/The Branch somewhere in the Art Street, Akureyri.

A collective piece from three international artists, Make Sure You Freeze Grandma commemorates ‘Holt’, the preserved house of a diseased Icelandic woman.

Alda Halldorsdottir was born on the island Hrisey in 1913. She grew up in her family home raised by her mother and uncle, and kept the same house as her residence until she passed on July 20th, 1998. At the time of her death Alda had no family; no spouse or partner, no children, and no living relatives. It is known that she was a spritely member of the Hrisey community, and without a living relative to bequeath her personal estate to, she donated her home to the island, eternally standing as a portal into the past.

Named ‘Holt’ Alda’s house is open for the Hrisey community and guests to visit at any time. The house remains completely untouched, everything in place as it was 17 years ago, when she passed.

Make Sure You Freeze Grandma considers the viewer, and any participant of Holt as Alda’s descendents. The different pieces of the exhibition are individually inspired by the experience of Alda’s home, frozen in time. As some of her international ‘grandchildren’ the exhibit features works by Canadian, Polish and British artists. The work consists of drawings, objects and an audio piece.

The audio piece by Magda Buczek is a traditional Polish lullaby, translated into icelandic in one of the cruellest ways you can deal with poetry and the language: the google translator tool. A plot cruel and strangely gloomy itself - a tale of a king, a warrior and princess who loved each other truly but had been eaten alive by a dog, a cat and a mouse. The story itself and the language is mutilated in two different ways: by google default translation and by the artist that reads it out loud in Icelandic without a command of the proper pronunciation. The outcome sounds like a misheard moan, a prey, a spell.

Talia Shaaked was drawn to what was beyond the clutter in the Holt House, Talia re-created some of the wallpaper featured in the Holt kitchen. Desiring to produce something that could surround, structure, and form space, the wallpaper drawings are a lining to the exhibitions interior space. They stand in as a backdrop to Alda’s time portal.

Interested in looking at spaces from a different perspective -whether a virtual, imaginary or atmospheric space- Anna Columbine was drawn to one room in particular in the Holt House, the bathroom. Capturing close-up views of the bathroom, the space has been obscured, turning it into a series of abstract images of colours, shapes and floating objects.

An extension of Holt, Make Sure you Freeze Grandma emulates the time portal created by Alda Halldorsdottir. Approach, open the door and experience a contemporary extension of an Icelandic time capsule.


Artists bio:
Magda Buczek - a multimedia artist based in Warsaw, Poland. She studied at Academy of fine Arts in krakow and Antwerp. Buczek works mainly with text, photography, video, performance and found footage. Recurring themes of her projects are female adolescent rituals and issues of representation in popular culture. She was exhibiting her works a.o. in Warsaw, Berlin, Krakow, New York and Mexico city.
