Helene Renard opnar sýninguna ENVELOPE í BOXinu, litla sýningarsal Myndlistarfélagsins

 

UMSLAG, sýning Helene Renard verður opnuð laugardaginn 15. maí kl. 14.00 í BOXinu, litla sýningarsal Myndlistarfélagsins.

Sýningin opnar  15. maí og lýkur 6. júní. Hún er opin um helgar og Hvítasunnuhelgina frá kl.14.00 - 17.00.  Einnig opið fyrstu vikuna eftir opnun alla virka daga frá kl.16.00 - 18.00.  Allir hjartanlega velkomnir og aðgangur ókeypis.

UMSLAG - ENVELOPE (Interior Space Enhancers)

Ferðin er hafin! Fyrsta boxið er komið til Jamaíka, New York. Box tvö lagði af stað í dag. Öðru efni sýningarinnar verður snotursamlega pakkað og ferðast með listamanninum, Helene Renard, með Icelandair, þriðjudaginn 11. maí.

Verkið snýst um hugtökin að brjóta saman/taka sundur og pakka niður/taka upp úr. Innstillingunni sem var sérstaklega gerð fyrir þetta rými, er ætlað að ýta undir þátttöku áhorfenda..

Einstakir hlutir í sýningunni sem eru gerðir úr felt og pappír, rannsaka það að brjóta saman og hlutverk þess í munstur- og kortagerð. Listamaðurinn kannar umbreytinguna úr tveimur víddum í þrjár og notar tækni úr ólíkum áttum, allt frá smíði til kortagerðar.

Eins og í fyrri verkum sínum, er innstillingu Helene ætlað að deila á  hugmyndina um list sem eitthvað til að horfa á en ekki snerta.  Áhorfandinn verður þáttakandi og notandi.  UMSLAG er hugleiðing um samband líkama og rýmis og  könnun á stærðum. Listaverk sem er ætlað að ferðast.

ENVELOPE (Interior Space Enhancers)

The journey has begun! Box 1 has reached Jamaica, New York. Box 2 has departed today, and the rest of the assembly will be packed flat and travel with the artist, Helene Renard, via Icelandair on Tuesday, May 11^th.

The conceptual focus of the work is Folding/Unfolding and Packing/Unpacking. The site-specific installation is meant to encourage engagement by the gallery visitor and participant.

Individual pieces, constructed of felt and paper, investigate the idea of the FOLD and its role in patternmaking and mapping. The artist explores transformations from 2 dimensions to 3 dimensional space, employing techniques used in different fields, from carpentry to cartography.

Printed images created using a monotype process introduce narrative and one type of scale to the work. Some of the pieces have been custom-made to fit into US Postal Service boxes. These containers, along with the pieces ferried by suitcase, carry with them the narrative of transport, of process, and of dialogue. This dynamic will change to display mode as pieces are placed in Gallery Box, a container of another scale.

As with her previous works, this installation is intended to challenge the art viewer’s notion of art as something to be looked at, but not touched. Here, the viewer becomes occupant, participant, and user. ENVELOPE provides invitations, directions, and other cues to encourage interaction with individual pieces. The work is a meditation on the relationship of the body to space, an exploration of scale, and of work that is tailored for travel.
